Electricity & Water Saving Tips

Use cold water

When it comes to washing laundry, use cold water as it cleans clothes as effectively as hot water. Also try to take cold showers in warm weather.

Close drapes in summer and open them in winter

By keeping sun out on hot days and letting sun in on cold days, you regulate the temperature in your house and save electricity on aricons, fans and heaters.

Fun Fact: Heating homes in the winter and cooling them in the summer accounts for over 55% of the average person’s utility bills.

Use the microwave more

A microwave uses significantly less power than an oven or stove and can be used instead for cooking.

Take advantage of off peak times

You are charged more in peak times (during the day) than early morning and late evenings. Try to do your washing and other energy consuming chores during off peak times.

Switch to energy saving appliances and lightbulbs

Old appliances and lightbulbs use much more electricity than energy saving light bulbs and appliances.

Fun Fact: refrigerators annually consume the energy equivalent of 25 huge power plants.

Switch off by your DB box

When your are away from home, switch off your DB box to ensure no energy is consumed in your absence.

Repurpose water

Wash dishes or shower over a bucket and use the water again for watering plants, flushing the toilet etc.

Shower instead of bath

Showers use less water than baths. Try to limit showers to 5 minutes at a time to save even more.

Fun Fact: cutting 4mins off your shower, can save 114 liters of water.

Close your taps

Ensure you close your taps properly. A dripping faucet can contribute to hundreds of litres of wasted water a month.

Fun Fact: a leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste almost 12 000 liters per year.

Check the weather

Don’t water your plants on rainy days. Save and store rain water to use somewhere else, like watering plants on dry days.

Cover your pool

Use a canvas pool cover that will prevent water in your pool from evaporating and having to refill your pool regularly.
